South African Conquers Rats on the World Stage

Editor: This is NOT a paid for or asked for post. Forgive us if we get excited when we see entrepreneurs with South African Roots making real waves in countries outside our borders. They raise the profile of South Africa and, in a small way, that encourages people to travel to, invest in and just talk about the country that we love so much. So think about this wonderful news as MyPR‘s small way of thanking Ian for flying our flag high.

Every great invention starts with a common frustration. For Ian Fleming, founder of Vulcan Pest, the breaking point was a relentless rat invasion in the lush Santa Cruz Mountains of California. But long before designing a revolutionary pest-control device, Fleming’s path was shaped by a background of resilience, resourcefulness, and a problem-solving mindset forged early in life.

South African Connection

Fleming (Ian Oki Fleming) spent his early life growing up in South Africa spending time in the bush with his father who was a hunter, before moving to the United States. He settled in California, working as an engineer in Silicon Valley before leaving his job in January 2026 to focus full-time on Vulcan Pest, which he began developing in 2021 after dealing with a severe rat infestation at his home in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

While innovators often adopt a global outlook, the grit required to disrupt an established industry frequently traces back to formative personal roots. Growing up navigating diverse landscapes and unique infrastructural and environmental challenges instils a distinct brand of practical ingenuity.

For Fleming, that background cultivated an engineer’s instinct – an ethos of building things that actually work under harsh, real-world conditions rather than just looking good on paper. Whether dealing with rural or suburban pest strains, the resourcefulness required to look at a standard mechanical problem and rethink it from the ground up often finds its roots in the adaptability learned from studying how to hunt and trap all forms of game in South Africa’s dynamic bush environments.

A Better Rat Trap

Traditional pest control has long relied on two extremes: messy, dangerous snap traps or harmful chemicals and poisons that pose risks to pets and wildlife. Fleming realized that a better solution required physics rather than peril.

Thus, the Vulcan Multi-Rodent Catcher (commonly celebrated as the Genius Rat Trap) was born. Unlike ordinary bucket-lid traps restricted to small mice, Vulcan’s patented over-the-edge design and precision-weighted Trigger Plank are engineered specifically to handle larger pests like rats and squirrels.

Auto-Resetting Mechanism: After a catch, the plank automatically resets itself, allowing for continuous, multi-catch efficiency without human reset loops.

Safety First: Completely free of dangerous toxins or exposed snapping bars, it provides a humane live-catch or clean lethal option that is entirely safe around children and household pets.

Stepping Into the Shark Tank: A Major Milestone

The trajectory of Vulcan Pest shifted into high gear with a high-stakes appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank – Season 18 Episode 5 – on 28 October 2026. Pitching the sharks with the confidence of an engineer who trusted his numbers and product efficacy, Fleming showcased how a simple bucket lid could be transformed into a high-performance eradication tool.

When Ian Fleming brought Vulcan Pest and his revolutionary Genius Rat Trap to the Tank he walked into a high-stakes negotiation backed by impressive traction.

Ian entered the tank asking for $100,000 for 5% equity (valuing the company at $2 million), showcasing strong sales ($5 million in projected annual revenue) for his auto-resetting bucket rat trap.

Before stepping into the Tank, Fleming had invested roughly $190,000 of his own money (including a 401(k) loan) and successfully scaled the business from scratch to $1 million in sales in just its first 11 months, working on it alongside his engineering job before leaving it, entirely to run Vulcan Pest full-time.

The Shark Tank Reaction: The ingeniously simple, auto-resetting multi-rodent bucket trap sparked an intense bidding war among multiple sharks who recognized the massive consumer and commercial potential of disrupting the traditional, toxin-heavy pest control market.

Three Sharks went hard after a deal.

Vulcan Solves Rat Neophobia

The pitch showcased not just a clever gadget, but a masterclass in bootstrapping and hardware scaling, turning a common backyard frustration into a viral sensation and a powerhouse e-commerce brand. The Sharks minds changed to a bidding war when Fleming pointed out how years os studying animals helped him solve the Rat neophobia problem.

Rat neophobia – literally the “fear of the new” – is one of the most fascinating and frustrating evolutionary adaptations in wild rodents. It’s the exact reason why pest control can be such a head-scratching challenge, and why rats are absurdly good at surviving around humans.

If a rat encounters an unfamiliar food source, it won’t gorge on it. It will take a tiny “sampling” nibble and wait 24 to 48 hours to see if it gets sick. If it experiences nausea, it develops conditioned taste aversion (bait shyness) and will never touch that food or smell again.

Crucially, rats cannot vomit. Their stomach physiology and lack of a neural emetic centre mean that if they swallow poison, they cannot purge it. Neophobia is their primary biological defence mechanism against lethal ingestion.

The Vulcan Pest Difference

Traps are set out unarmed and loaded with non-toxic, delicious food (like peanut butter or bacon fat) for days or weeks. Only after the rats get comfortable eating from the trap is it actually set to trigger. When set to trigger the same food is used except that the trap drops eacg rat into a sealed bucket container alive allowing ro later extermination or catch and release.

Vulcan Snags a Deal

Shark Damon John snagged the deal at 12.5% with Fleming saying that he felt comfortable letting a Shark in who had practical experience of the rat problem.

Daymond John initially offered $100,000 for 15% equity, citing potential retail and distribution synergy (including ties with Carolina Coops). Ian counter-offered 7.5% and then 10%.

The Final Deal: Daymond held firm at a lower valuation but came down slightly, and Ian agreed to close the deal at $100,000 for 12.5% equity with no royalty structure attached.

The appearance sparked an intense, multi-shark bidding war as investors recognized the mass-market appeal and commercial scalability of a device already championed by top online reviewers and pest experts alike.

After Shark Tank

Post-Shark Tank, Vulcan Pest has transitioned from a clever DIY solution into a household name in modern pest management. For an inventor whose foundational drive traces back to early days in South Africa, the journey stands as proof that practical innovation combined with relentless execution can conquer even the oldest problems known to mankind.

And, not forgetting the many news sites, MyPR included, that have picked up on his “better mouse trap” story.
