Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has noted with concern the circulating voice note on social media platforms urging the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro residents to participate in an illegal protest or shut down on Monday (9 September 2024).
MEC Nqatha has been made aware of the circulating voice note and calls on the people of this province to desist from participating in illegal protests or shutdowns. Section 17 of the Constitution and the Regulation of Gatherings Act sets out how protesters must conduct themselves.
MEC Nqatha said: “As a government, we are making a clarion call to the citizens of this province to safeguard access to education, and we also want to emphasise that any “shutdown ” would be illegal and discouraged in favour of measures that do not infringe on other people’s rights”.
The circulating voice note has since been forwarded to the police to investigate a possible charge of inciting violence.
