MEC for Economic Development and Environmental Affairs, Nonkqubela Pieters, MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Hon. Xolile Nqatha, and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe, led a vehicle check point roadblock operation on the N2 opposite the North End Prison today.
“We are here today with Honourable Xolile Nqatha, Honourable Nonkqubela Pieters, and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board to support the roadblock program and enhance safety across the Metro. Surveillance cameras have already been installed on the western side of the Metro. In the coming weeks, our focus will shift to tavern operations and intensifying roadblocks in township areas. These efforts aim to ensure motorists comply with law enforcement and to deliver a safer summer season. We want everyone visiting our city to know that we will be present at every corner, and we are thrilled to welcome tourists to enjoy all parts of the Metro,” said Mayor Lobishe.
Hon. Nonkqubela Pieters added, “We want our tourists to arrive home safely. If we avoid fatalities, tourists will return to the Eastern Cape. We urge all residents to drink responsibly this festive season.”
Deputy Director for Traffic and Licensing Law Enforcement, Eric Tiso, stated, “This vehicle check point marks the launch of an intensified law enforcement campaign, running from 6 December 2024 to 13 January 2025. The focus will be on combating drinking and driving, reducing road accidents, and preventing overloading, all to achieve safer outcomes for the Metro.”
