No Easter Fatalities on PE Roads (As of Monday Afternoon)

26 April 2011 By NMB Communications

With several successes under their belt, officials from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Traffic Department were still out in full force on Monday afternoon to ensure adherence to the rules of the road.

Perhaps their vigilance played a major role to ensure that no fatalities were recorded within the boundaries of Nelson Mandela Bay as only 14 (fourteen) accidents were recorded by Monday afternoon, 25 April. Some of the unlucky motorists and pedestrians only sustained minor injuries.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Head of Traffic and Licensing, Mr Hamilton Totoyi, said the zero tolerance stance during Easter Weekend bore fruit and that his team will continue to show no mercy on motorists who deliberately break the rules of the road.

On Thursday, 21 April at the roadblock between 10:00 and 18:00 the hard work of the Law Enforcement Officers led to 294 prosecutions of which 43 were unlicensed drivers, 29 for unregistered vehicles, 22 for defective tyres and two drivers were caught for driving under the influence of alcohol. A total of 93 outstanding warrants of arrests were executed which translates to a collected amount of R46 800.

Even better figures were confirmed on Saturday, 23 April between 20:00 and 06:00 when a staggering 919 cases was recorded. An amazing 619 speedsters must now cough up for their indiscretion, 35 drivers were caught while driving under the influence, 68 unlicensed drivers were caught red-handed and 67 unlicensed/unregistered vehicles were pulled over.

Transgressors of our laws of the road did not have it any easier on Sunday, 24 April when a total of 768 cases were recorded between 14:00 and 22:00 when amongst others, 15 drunken drivers were pulled over, 387 speeding offences were recorded, an unbelievable 107 unlicensed/unregistered vehicles prosecuted and 88 unlicensed drivers were stopped from endangering the lives of other road users.

Traffic officials are still working around the clock to deal with motorists taking unnecessary chances on the roads.
