NMBM Metro Police committed to residents & tourist’s enjoying a crime free festive season

With the festive season in full swing, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police reaffirms its commitment to tourists and residents’ safety by adopting a zero tolerance approach to all bylaw offences, maintaining high visibility in hotspot areas across the Metro.

In collaboration with the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, South African Police Services and Immigration Services, Metro Police recently conducted safety blitzes across the Metro, and achieved significant results which include:

  • 13 arrests for drunk driving.
  • 3 arrests for drug possession.
  • 6 arrests for illegal immigrants.
  • 1 arrest for selling liquor without a license.
  • 185 fines issued for public alcohol consumption.

Metro Police, Acting Commissioner Advocate Andrew Moses urges both locals and tourists to celebrate responsibly, comply with the law, and help create a safe environment for the upcoming peak cruise and festive season.

“The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police department is committed to ensuring a safer festive season in 2024. It is concerning that in December alone, 185 people have been fined for consuming liquor on the beach front. Our beaches should be safe, alcohol-free zones, and we are going to come hard on bylaw transgressions”, said MMC for Safety and Security, Cllr Lawu.

We are appealing to all Nelson Mandela Bay residents to adhere to all protocols,” said Metro Police Acting Commissioner, Advocate Andrew Moses.

In addition to this, Metro Police officers have conducted raids at taverns and spaza shops in KwaZakhele and New Brighton, which yielded to 2 arrests for illegally selling liquor, 46 fines issued for traffic violations and 2 fines for illegal connections valued at R8 000.

Residents are urged to comply with the law to avoid public drinking, ensuring a safer and enjoyable festive season for all.
