NMBM Housing Delivery Improving However Challenges Remain

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality housing administration and delivery has improved in the past two years, however challenges of delays related to extortion, pace of electrification and land availability versus the backlog remain a challenge.

This was revealed during an oversight visit by the Provincial Human Settlement Portfolio Committee to a number of housing project in Nelson Mandela Bay.

This current financial year 2024/25 the Metro has been funded to build 600 houses for R 123 million. Currently 126 houses have been constructed.

The Portfolio Committee is in the Metro on a four day oversight visit at completed and ongoing housing projects to check on quality of work, identify challenges and interact with beneficiaries and affected communities.

The Metro currently has a backlog of 126000 houses and 184 approved informal settlements.

Speaking to the Metro councillors and officials the Portfolio Chairperson MPL Makhaya Mtwabu said he was pleased that the housing delivery program in Nelson Mandela Bay was proceeding well. “We have identified a few minor challenges like delays due to projects being disrupted, poor coordination between relevant departments and minor defects in a few houses. We are pleased that we were presented with solutions to these challenges,” said MPL Twabu.

On Tuesday, the MPLs visited a project in Chatty, in an area called Jachvlakte where 275 houses have been completed with 52 remaining..

On Wednesday the delegation will visit two housing projects in Kwanobuhle, a three projects in Motherwel and one in Khayamnandi in Despatch.

Part of the oversight visits include interacting with beneficiaries and to those who are still on the waiting list to check their satisfaction with the quality of their houses and give an update about hosing delivery.
