Following the huge drop in the number of COVID-19 new infections in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Acting Mayor Councillor Thsonono Buyeye has called on residents to continue to adhere to the regulations as the battle against the pandemic is far from over.
The Mayor was responding to the latest statistics which show that as at 17 August 2020 the City had a total of 486 COVID-19 active cases with all residential areas reporting less than 100 active cases.
“It is quite encouraging to see the results of the work we have all put in to save as many lives as we could. It is indeed a good story to tell. We are however cautiously optimistic as we could still have a second wave if people do not adhere to the basic safety measures that have proved to be effective if done correctly.”
“With Level 2 of the lockdown in place, it means the economy will be reopened, allowing many people to move around the country. We are now calling on residents to not thrown away their masks as the fight is far from over. The infections might be dropping but the virus is still very much deadly.”
A total of 21105 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported so far within NMBM, 869 deaths recorded and 18865 recoveries reported.
NMBM Disaster Management chairperson Shane Brown said: “It is so unfortunate that hundreds of people died but the recoveries deserve to be celebrated too. The results show what we can achieve when we all work together. We have not closed the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium yet and the Dr Elizabeth Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni Field Hospital also remains open to continue to assist COVID-19 patients. It’s very likely that we will have a second wave but we don’t want it to be worse than the first wave that is why we are urging residents to wear their masks, wash their hands regularly and adhere to social distancing.”
