The Igazi Foundation is proud to announce that after discussions with Doctor Neil Littleton and his staff, it has managed to persuade these disheartened medical personnel to move into the new Outpatients section of the Aloe Igazi Unit on the 7th floor M Block, Port Elizabeth provincial Hospital. This took place on 1 March 2013. After a very public opening of the ward on 9 May 2012, the Department of Health reneged on providing nursing staff that would have seen the Eastern Cape’s first stem cell transplant unit operational, providing international quality treatment for those suffering with Haematological diseases.
The foundation, having exhausted all the proper channels, as well as seeing Dr Littleton exhaust the same, motivated for at least a world class outpatients for our Haematology patients as a small step toward the goal of a fully operational unit.
This in no way changes Igazi’s determination to make the adjoining General Ward and Stem Cell transplant unit operational, as soon as sufficient nursing staff is appointed by the Department of Health, to provide the haematological services this province so desperately needs.

Well done Igazi. Now if only the EC Govt would understand the dire need for this service. Perhaps the politicians may understand the need a little better if a couple of them succumbed to Leukemia, perhaps that is when we will really see action, but then again, it might be too late for them to benefit from the service as well.
