The Nelson Mandela Bay Walk for Peace on Thursday, 31 July starting at 11am from the historical Dan Qeqe Stadium to the Nangoza Jebe Hall will mark the end of Mandela Month, observed for the first time without the presence in the physical world of the founding father of democratic South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
Mayoral Committee member responsible for Constituency Coordination, Cllr Fikile Desi, said the focus of the event is to encourage all those who played an active role to make Mandela Month and specifically Nelson Mandela International Day a major success to participate and simultaneously promote peace, democracy, compassion and unity amongst different national groups in Nelson Mandela Day.
“It is an attempt to appeal to all communities to multiply their efforts in living the values demonstrated by the forebears in bringing about the freedom and democracy celebrated from 1994 to 2014.
“Civil Society Organisations, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Directorates, political leadership and all state institutions are invited to send representatives to take part in the relay from Dan Qeqe to Njoli Square and end at the Nangoza Jebe Hall. Cyclists will also take part in the event.
“We will appreciate if all the participants can have a poster or wear clothing with slogans that demonstrate a commitment to make every day a Nelson Mandela Day,” Cllr Desi said.
Interested organizations can e-mail tnxumalo@mandelametro.gov.za to confirm their intention to take part.
See you at the starting line!
