In a significant step towards enhancing international relations and positioning Nelson Mandela Bay as a prime investment destination, Executive Mayor Councillor Gary Van Niekerk signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the German City of Braunschweig on Wednesday, 23 October 2024.
Editor: EVEN MORE significant is that Gary didn’t feel the need to hop onto a plane and fly to Germany for the signing.
The MOU signing was part of an international visit by a high-powered delegation from the Province of Lower Saxony, which has an established cooperative relationship with the Eastern Cape government. The delegation included the Mayor of Braunschweig, highlighting the importance of this partnership.

As an immediate benefit, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) anticipates hosting potential investors early next year, showcasing the Metro’s economic development value chain to position it as an investment destination of choice.
