In a decisive move to tackle the rising crime rates in the Metro, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has allocated R16.4 million from its operating budget to bolster crime-fighting initiatives. This significant investment underscores the Municipality’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its residents.
Councillor Bulelwa Mafaya, Mayoral Committee Member for Budget and Treasury announced this commitment during a full Council sitting on 3 September 2024. “As the Budget and Treasury Directorate, we are responding to the call for an all hands-on deck approach in the fight against crime.
The lack of resources has been a major impediment to our efforts. This funding will make a substantial difference,” said MMC Mafaya.
This announcement follows a recent visit by Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, who held crime awareness public participation meetings in hotspot areas. The Minister also announced the deployment of specialised police units to Nelson Mandela Bay, which will commence operations immediately.
Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police Commissioner, Andrew Moses, highlighted the Metro’s strategic approach to crime prevention.
“We are moving towards a smart plan of dealing with crime, in collaboration with the South African Police Services and other law enforcement stakeholders. Our plan includes the use of CCTV cameras, shot spotter technology, mobile surveillance vehicles, and increased visibility in hotspot areas,” said Commissioner Moses.
“We are encouraged by the budget commitment. These funds will significantly enhance our efforts to make Nelson Mandela Bay safe again.”
Acting City Manager, Mandla George, addressed the Council on the plans to reactivate the CCTV cameras. “An assessment has already been made to check the condition of the existing cameras, and they are still in working order. We are now busy with the supply chain processes to appoint a company that will manage the system,” said Acting City Manager George.
This comprehensive approach, supported by the substantial budget allocation, demonstrates the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s dedication to creating a safer environment for all its residents.
