The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is calling on all residents to join forces in the fight against crime and reclaim our streets. A recent collaborative law enforcement operation led by key agencies resulted in significant strides towards this goal, with the arrest of two illegal immigrants and the confiscation of R50,000 worth of liquor in Walmer township on Sunday, 1 September 2024.
The operation, which ran from 18:30 until 02:00, was a joint effort involving NMBM Metro Police, the Electricity Directorate, the South African Police Service’s Crime Combating Unit, Public Order Policing, Walmer SAPS, and the South African National Defence Force. This multi-disciplinary approach focused on crime prevention, liquor compliance, vehicle checkpoints, and addressing undocumented immigrants.
Metro Police Acting Commissioner, Advocate Andrew Moses, emphasized the importance of these coordinated efforts, “Our Metro continues to battle with high levels of crime, and as law enforcement agencies, we have enhanced our strategies and are collaborating more closely with key role players, including the SANDF. These efforts are aimed at mitigating the effects of crime in the Metro and sending a clear message to all members of society that crime will not be tolerated in Nelson Mandela Bay”.
However, the success of these operations depends not only on law enforcement but also on the active participation of our community. We urge all residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and work together to create a safer environment. Community involvement is essential in reclaiming our streets and ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
During the operation, two immigrants were arrested for failing to produce valid immigration documents after being found operating a spaza shop with a tampered electricity connection. A fine of R12,000 was issued for this transgression. Additionally, the owner of the confiscated liquor was detained at Walmer Police Station and later fined for operating without a liquor license. Three other establishments were closed for operating outside permitted hours, with fines for electricity tampering amounting to R36,000.
NMBM urges all residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Together, we can create a safer and more secure environment for everyone.
