The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and members of the Metro’s Dropped Vehicles Community (stance) have undertaken to work together to ensure safety on the Metro’s roads.
Yesterday, 8 February 2021, I was joined by Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Cllr Rano Kayser, as well as the Metro’s Executive Director of Safety and Security and the Director of Traffic Services at a constructive meeting with a delegation from the Dropped Vehicles Community.
This meeting followed after recent misunderstandings surrounding the Metro Police and Traffic departments clamping down on unroadworthy vehicles. There was also confusion about the role the recently launched Traffic and Licensing Mobile Law Enforcement Centres’ would play in ensuring law and order on our roads.
The Director for Traffic Services invited the members of the Dropped Vehicles Community to attend a session where the Municipality can explain and educate members on what is allowed and what is not allowed in terms of the law.
The community members present agreed to this session and feedback on a date, time and place will be communicated very shortly.
The Metro will never target any community or any type of vehicle as long as they operate within the law.
We are clamping down on general lawlessness on our roads and unroadworthy vehicles. Any vehicle that is found not to be roadworthy, poses a danger to our residents. The Municipality has a responsibility to protect all road users and we must ensure compliance.
Anyone who is publicly stating that dropped cars and/or specific communities are being targeted is purposefully misleading residents and attempting to divide us. The people spreading these rumours only have their own narrow political interests in mind and do not care about the people of the Metro.
Together we can take Nelson Mandela Bay forward again!
