Near Water with Children? Be careful please

Police are appealing to parents/guardians to always keep a wide eye open on their children swimming in pools or in the sea during this festive period. The festive season attracts thousands of holidaymakers to the coast and also the public pools. This warning comes in the wake of a tragedy that took place on Sunday, 20 December 2015 at Three Pools at the Willows Resort in Summerstrand Port Elizabeth. It is alleged that a 4 year old boy drowned in the pool. The child victim was enjoying a day out with his aunt and other children when at about 12:00, his body was retrieved from the adult pool. Paramedics on the scene failed to resuscitate him. The child was allegedly playing in the kiddie’s pool earlier.

In Mmamethlake, Mpumalanga on Friday, 18 December 2015, two boys, aged 12 and 16 years, lost their lives in separate incidents – one as a result of drowning in a water reservoir and one apparently as a result of suicide.

Parents are urged to look after their children and discourage them from playing around rivers, dams, reservoirs and any other area that can place their lives in danger. They are further urged to monitor their whereabouts and to handle misunderstandings with their children in a sensitive manner.

A child must never be left alone or with other children in a pool. There must always be adult supervision around the pool. Public pools are full with people having fun and not often notice is taken of a person in trouble in the water. The SAPS urges people who are unable to swim not to be allowed in the water at all and also people who are intoxicated not to enter the water.
