“Municipality v Workers Conflict Must Be Urgently Resolved,” says Jack

13 February 2021 By NMB Communications

Dear MyPE

Please let us not sabotage our city. Let us not vandalise public facilities. If there is a difference of opinions amongst us, in resolving that, we must consider the residents of the Metro.

Striking workers, are allowed to strike or protest against any grievance they deem to infringe on their basic rights. Similarly, the municipality must be given space to provide the needed service to residents.

I call upon all people to operate within the prescript of the law. I also hope that both parties – the workers and the municipality engage in fruitful and constructive discussion.

Residents of the Metro have paid a heavy price from the misrule of both the DA and the ANC since 2016. Cool heads are called for. Wanton destruction of property is a price too huge for our economically depressed Metro. Recent events of competing on anarchy in the Metro, do not auger well for the residents of the Metro.

We all need to care about excellence. Let us all be mindful of the limited resources that are at our disposal. We all need to display utmost human rationality. Residents of the Metro you are on your own.

The opportunity to remedy the current misrule and mismanagement must be done through the ballot box at the voting stations. Not through ongoing cover up for relics of yesteryear’s racial prejudices.

When leadership lies to residents and covers up for delinquent councilors they open themselves up to all manner of, sometimes, unfair criticism. As much as many of us trusted Mayor Nqaba Banga’s integrity, his stance on defending a Rouge ward councilor, left us doubtful about him. A man with impeccable struggle credentials, could not be expected to undergo such a quick political metamorphosis. He, together with many of us, rejected the politics of dishonesty, as exemplified by the Zuma years.

His stand of taking personal responsibility for a ludicrous and, to be exact, blatantly racist decision boggles one’s mind.

We expect more from him. We cannot have a Mayor that we second guess, is he a puppet, is he blackmailed or not?

We need a Nqaba Banga that we have always known.

Coming clean on small things will help you when you deal with awkward and agent provocateurs.

The municipal workers must also not respond to wrong with another wrong, especially if allegations against them are true. Let them seek neutral, experienced and financially capable individuals to examine the feasibility of their demands, particularly under the current circumstances.

Bulldozing the Municipality to pay money it might not be able to sustain, will threaten, the very existence of this vital institution. Such people can be credible professionals.

Please let cool heads prevail.

Regards

Mkhuseli Jack

EDITOR: A scenic drive along the beachfront earlier today highlighted just how ridiculous the decision to close off the braai area really was with people congregating together all along the beachfront up to Schoenmakerskop where we turned around. The constant stream of traffic towards the beachfront reminded one of New Years Day. no masks, no social distancing, openly drinking, the citizens of Nelson Mandela Bay seem hellbent on making the COVID-19 infections SPIKE!

Comment here on The Removal of the Summerstrand Braai Areas was?
