Municipality flexes muscles during launch of Safety and Security Plan at Wells Estate Beach

6 December 2016 By NMB Communications

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Cllr John Best, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, issued a stern warning to motorists.

“Please do not drink and drive. If you are going out and you are going somewhere, get somebody to drive for you as the operations already started and they are definitely going to increase.

“I met with Mount Road Commander Major General Dawie Rabie this week and our Metro Police Chief Yolanda Faro. There is a plan in place for the whole Metro to address road safety.

“Executive Mayor the message that we jointly issue as the Metro, SAPS and other agencies, is that we would like to make our beaches and our city safe and we will not allow lawlessness on our beaches,” Cllr Best said.

Some of the objectives to reduce crime during the festive season in Nelson Mandela Bay are to ensure high visibility patrols, deploying law enforcement to identified high-risk areas, deterring people from speeding and joint roadblocks.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said: “Together with SAPS and a broad cross-section of stakeholders, we must show that we are highly capable of protecting the citizens of our metro against those criminal elements bent on ‘capitalizing’ during the hustle and bustle of the festive season.

“So we wish to announce today to those involved in criminal activity out there – that they have a war on their hands and that we are united in our common quest to defeat them,” Mayor Trollip said.

The Municipality’s Safety and Security in collaboration with the South African Police Services conducted a roadblock as part of the launch and immediately enjoyed success.

Captain André Beetge, SAPS Spokesperson, said 802 mandrax tablets with a street value of R32 000 was confiscated and two persons arrested.

Beetge also warned Nelson Mandela Bay residents that a very toxic and environmentally hazardous chemical called Kemprin 200 EC was stolen from a truck at Truckers Inn in Wells Estate.

“A box containing 12 x one litre bottles was stolen,” Beetge said.

Any person with information can contact their nearest police station or Captain Beetge at 082 302 5882.
