A R9.4 million infrastructure upgrade project is currently underway in Njoli Square, in preparation for the commencement of the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) operations in the 2018-19 financial year.
This comes on the back of the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the taxi industry in the Metro, bringing all 10 taxi associations on board.
The teams have broken ground already and the project involves the construction of ancillary works in terms of which Njoli Road will be upgraded to a dual carriageway.
With a duration of four months, the upgrade will extend to Koyana Street in Zwide, where 8 meter wide carriage-ways will be constructed.
Included in the scope of works is the rehabilitation of the existing road, which will become the southbound carriage in Koyana Street and westbound carriage-way in Njoil Road.
The initial focus will be on the replacement of the existing kerbs and channels, including the construction of associated stormwater infrastructure, IT cable ducts, traffic signs and painting of road markings.
The second phase of the project will include landscaping and general beautification within the road reserve.
The local Exempt Micro Enterprises (EMEs) participation is 25 percent of the contract value, to ensure that local communities benefit from the project.
