The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has warned against the use of cellphones and excessive speeding by motorists after many were caught red handed breaking the law on Monday, 2 October 2023, as the NMBM Traffic officers intensified road safety law enforcement.
This comes as the Metro is set to give a special focus to road safety and road worthiness of vehicles driving within NMB roads during the Transport Month and towards the festive season.
The massive vehicle check point was conducted on the N2 near the Cotswold and Kragga Kamma Road interchange from 6:30am to 9am, where a total of 188 cases were recorded and fines issued.
NMBM Traffic Services Acting Director, Eric Tiso said during the operation motorists were fined for using their cellphones while driving which is a serious offence that often causes accidents.
“We were stopping motorists and they were busy taking pictures of us while driving, right in front of us. That is a serious offence. People have this social media pressure of wanting to share news instantly and they don’t mind breaking the law. As we launch the Transport Month we want to highlight these challenges and use this time to remind all motorists that they need to give a grace period for any eventuality while on the road.”
“The speed that people travel in is also a major concern for us. When you are driving, your full attention should be fully on the road. We got reports that there were some accidents this morning, with some people blaming the work that we were doing and that cannot be correct because we are conducting our day to day work,” Tiso said.
The 188 cases recorded include:
- 51 unlicenced drivers
- 55 unlicenced motor vehicles
- 21 number plate offences
- Nine overloaded vehicles
- 24 defective tyres
- Seven notices to discontinue use motor vehicles.
During this month, the Metro will be promoting safety across all modes of transport with the aim to enforce compliance by all road users including pedestrians.
The Metro Traffic Services will intensify visibility, inspection of driver and vehicle fitness, check public transport fitness and compliance of drivers and their documents.
Tiso said the operation would also concentrate on moving violations, execution of warrants of arrest, to check for overloading of passengers and goods and concentrate on drunken driving.
