More racial disharmony came to the fore in Port Elizabeth earlier this morning as a group of ‘concerned black parents’ of pupils at Collegiate High School handed over a memorandum of demands to the Principal, Mrs M. Bagshaw.
In the preamble Collegiate has been accused of being racist and the keeper of “ongoing discriminatory policies
Among the corrective measures demanded were:
- A review of the code of conduct of the school
- A review of the school house names to eradicate the effect and memory of being a former colony and to consider names reflective of a democratic South Africa
- A review of all disciplinary actions placed against learners
- Transformation of sport in the school
- Transformation of the number of black learners
- Transformation of the number of black teachers
The group then placed a limit of seven days on the school for a response.
In the words of the school motto; “Facta, non Verba” it appears that these parents have done their Deed and used Words.

Dear ‘concerned black parents’
THIS 1 September 2016 report in the Despatch Live highlights how engaging with the Management of Collegiate brought about a sympathetic ear and change. So, why now do you see fit to protest?
“Similarly‚ the deputy principal at Collegiate Girls’ High School in Port Elizabeth‚ Derryk Jordan‚ said that in June last year the school’s senior management team met with a group of black pupils to hear their concerns and allow them to make suggestions about the hair policy.
“They made various suggestions as to what they thought was acceptable in terms of hairstyles and what was not acceptable. These suggestions were incorporated into the school’s policy on hair and have been in effect since then‚” Jordan said.”
