Today, Tuesday 19 April 2016 the Executive Mayor, accompanied by the Vice Chancellor of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Members of the Mayoral Committee welcomed the Commodore and crew of the MS Queen Victoria Cruise Liner
The MS Queen Victoria is one of the biggest cruise liners in the world and was berthing for the first time at the port of Port Elizabeth. Speaking at the exchange of plaques between Transnet National Ports Authority Manager, the Commodore of the Cunard Cruise and the Municipality, the Executive Mayor said it was indeed a great honour and priviledge to welcome the MS Queen Victoria, as it berths in our shores for the very first time.
The visit of the MS Queen Victoria comes as the Municipality, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University are involved in an intensive process of developing a strategy to maximize the benefits of the ocean economy for the Metro. He informed them that two weeks ago, on 08 April 2016, President Zuma and Members of his Cabinet visited this port to update the nation on all the initiatives related to the ocean economy. On 14 April 2016 we were also visited by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms Thokozile Xasa who met stakeholders in the Tourism sector for a discussion on the role they must play in promoting our city as a sea side destination of choice. Her arrival comes only a few days after we hosted the 2016 Easter Splash Festival and the 2016 Ironman African Championship in this Metro.
The presence of the 294m long, 62.5m high majestic beauty and its 2000 passengers in our harbour therefore gives practical meaning to the implementation of the tourism pillar of the ocean economy in the Metro.
The visit by each cruise liner to our Metro contributes immensely to our economy because the passengers spend on shopping, leisure, accommodation and in the game reserves around the Metro.
The Executive Mayor pledged to work more closely with the Transnet National Ports Authority and operators of ships like the Queen Victoria to ensure more visits to the Metro.
