Mayor hailed for going beyond call of duty to support education

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Dr Danny Jordaan, was hailed by Premier Phumulo Masualle and Education MEC Mandla Makapula for going beyond the call of duty to provide support services for centres of learning in Nelson Mandela Bay and the handing over of school shoes to deserving learners.

These statements were made at a press conference that followed an extensive Back to School tour in Nelson Mandela Bay, led by Premier Masualle, MEC Makapula and Mayor Jordaan since Wednesday when schools opened their gates.

“The Executive Mayor demonstrated his commitment to improve the quality of education for his citizens in the Metro by donating school shoes to needy primary school learners.

“He has also pledged to provide security to some schools threatened by criminal elements and vandalism by appointing security personnel and caretakers through their Expanded Public Works Programme,” Premier Masualle said.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality targets the contracted employment of 330 non-teaching staff such as caretakers, secretaries and security personnel at Bay schools since November 2015 with a dedicated budget of R6,4 million. Currently 295 people are contracted.

MEC Makapula reemphasized the statement by the Premier and said he takes his hat off to the Executive Mayor.

Even though education is not a core function and responsibility of the municipality, the Executive Mayor is showing leadership by contributing to education as it is a crucial building block in improving society.

Premier Masualle said provincial government is declaring zero tolerance on:

  1. Delays in filling of educator vacancies, a situation that allows learners to be without teachers,
  2. Long periods of sick leave without remedial action,
  3. Late coming of educators and learners,
  4. Late delivery of text books,
  5. Poor monitoring of schools, curriculum streams and syllabus coverage by Education District Offices, subject advisors and district offices.
