Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan continued to demonstrate his commitment to offer care and support to the elderly and disabled. Yesterday, 24 May 2016 the Executive Mayor visited the Cheshire Homes for the disabled in Cleary Estate to address the pressing concerns raised by staff and residents who have been victims of countless burglaries and robberies.
The Executive Mayor also conducted a site walkabout with staff and residents, to identify areas that require additional security such as CCTV, secure fencing and security guards to patrol the perimeter. The Mayor also donated 4 much needed wheelchairs to the management of Cheshire Homes for those who are in need.
Cheshire Homes is a place that accommodates both the elderly and the disabled, with most of them wheelchair bound.
Residents and committee members of the Cheshire Homes Committee were given the opportunity to share their experiences and challenges with the Executive Mayor, which primarily focused on the safety and security of residents. Residents also raised issues like, perimeter fencing, adequate lighting and CCTV surveillance.
“I really want to thank the Mayor for coming today. Just the effort that he made to come here today, that shows that he has an interest in people like us who are disabled. The things we need would really make a difference in our lives, especially the medical equipment that we require on a day to day basis,” said one of the residents Lance Van Heerden.
Sikosonke Mani, who is also a student at Port Elizabeth TVET College, Dower Campus said: “We hope that the Mayor is going to come back to us because we really need security and that he will put pressure on Social Development to engage with the homes. We say thank you to the Mayor that he has come here in person to listen to our views and that he didn’t send anyone”.
“I think very big step by the Mayor to come to the most vulnerable people in society who are disabled. Apart from our needs, the fact that he came here today really means a lot. We are looking forward to the Mayor’s follow up visit, where we know he will come with solutions.” added another resident, Luxolo Voxo.
In his address, the Mayor commended the Management and Chairman on the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility, despite all its challenges. He also gave credit to the unpaid volunteers who give their time to take care of those who need support.
“When I look at you today, I feel the spirit of comradery here despite all the problems. I said to your leadership here that they should draw up a budget and give it to us so that we can see how we can work together to deal with some of the immediate challenges. We have to do all that we can to make a difference,” said Executive Mayor, Jordaan. This city can make a difference and it must make a difference.”
The Mayor will now engage with the leadership of Cheshire Homes to begin the implementation of solutions to the immediate concerns raised by the residents during the presentation.
