Mayor Benson Fihla on Epainette Mbeki

I would like to bid a sad farewell to Comrade Epainette Mbeki, the mother of Former President Thabo Mbeki and Moeletsi Mbeki.  I have learnt of the passing of Mama Epainette Mbeki, with a deep sense of sadness and loss.

She was a leader of our liberation struggle whose sacrifices led to the miracle of a new and transforming South Africa that we now enjoy. Mrs Mbeki was a great revolutionary in her own right and well respected when she joined the Communist Party of South Africa in the 1930s. She gave strong support as a wife of Isithwalandwe/Seaparankoe, the well-regarded late leader of the African National Congress, a Marxist Leninist, a great teacher and accomplished author, Comrade Govan Mbeki.

She also became a sole source of strength and support to their children in particular Thabo and Moeletsi who were in exile as their contribution to the liberation struggle put them in imminent danger. It is with a sense of great respect that we as the people of Nelson Mandela Bay will dip the revolutionary flag in honour of this great giant of our liberation struggle.

I therefore take this opportunity to announce that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be holding a Memorial Service on Friday, 13 June at 13:00 at the Port Elizabeth City Hall in honour of this humble heroine of our nation, Mrs Mbeki.

We urge members of the public and employees of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to attend this Memorial Service. Hamba kakuhle. Lala ngoxolo MaMbeki. Robala hantle. Rest in peace.
