A new Disaster Management Head has been appointed to take up this responsibility to alleviate the negative effects caused by disasters across the Metro. Dr. Sindisiwe “Sindi” Nyide, has hit the ground running after joining the Metro effective from 23 October 2024. She joins the Metro at a critical time as flood disasters have become frequent in the Bay.
Part of the shake-up she will lead includes the development of medium to long term sustainable disaster mitigation plans, proactive disaster management and the Metro’s swift coordinated responsiveness in the event that a disaster occurs.
As a qualified Disaster Management practitioner and researcher with an outstanding background and extensive experience in the Disaster Management field, Dr. Nyide hold the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Science from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), a Masters Degree in Disaster Management from the University of the Free State (UFS), a Honours Degree in Bachelor of Business Administration from Southern Business School (SBS), an Advanced University Diploma in Disaster Management from the University of the Free State, Bachelor of Science Degree in Pure an Applied Biochemistry from University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) and a Higher Certificate in Local Government and Development Management from Management College of Southern Africa.
“The last few weeks have been busy for us as a Metro with the recent rains causing some damage in different areas. Our goal is to implement the Disaster Management cycle to strengthen effective and efficient disaster risk reduction measures that can prevent or mitigate the impact of a catastrophic event, considering the effects of climate change. By collaborating with various stakeholders and role players, we will incorporate the legislation and policies to have a fully functional Disaster Management Centre and disaster-resilient and capacitated communities,” Dr. Nyide said.
She added that she was looking forward to serving the NMB community with pride and excellence.
Dr. Nyide brings a wealth of experience as she has participated in structures including National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), provincial and local Disaster Management advisory forums.
“I come to this beautiful Metro coming from the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Disaster Management Centre. I trust that we will work well with various stakeholders in NMB as we find sustainable solutions to mitigate disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic really showed us that when we all work together, we can triumph as a people,” she added.
Her appointment demonstrates the Municipality’s commitment to effectively manage natural disasters and fill critical vacancies for the benefit of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality residents.
