Nelson Mandela Bay public libraries have arranged a week of storytelling fun in the Bay to celebrate national Library Week.
The South African Library Week takes place annually in the week of the Human Rights Day, as access to information is one of the fundamental human rights. This year it takes place from Tuesday, 22, to Friday, 25 March 2011. The theme of Library Week 2011, as set by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) is: “Read in your own language in your library”.
Programmes in the NMBM libraries will focus on storytelling in 3 languages (Afrikaans, English and Xhosa), as listening to stories is a precursor to literacy. The libraries will also use the opportunity to introduce youngsters to the libraries and to the resources available, for example the Main Library is hosting a week-long introduction to information searching for primary school children. The Linton Grange, Motherwell, Walmer and West End libraries will hold storytelling sessions in the libraries
The highlight of the week will be the outreach to include those who cannot come to the library – storytelling sessions at a number of crèches and at the following shopping centres between 12:30 and 14: 30 on the days indicated:, the Kwanobuhle Shopping Complex on 22 March, Ziyabuya Shopping Centre in Kwadwesi on 23 March , and the Walmer Park Shopping Centre on 24 March. In-between stories the children will be entertained with colouring-in and drawing sessions. There will also be a visit to the Dora Nginza Hospital by staff from the Zwide library to inform new mothers of the parenting and other books at the libraries.
The culmination of the Library Week programme is on Friday 25 March, when pre-schools will attend storytelling sessions at the Red Location Precinct, and phase 6 of the Wall of Honour project honouring local heroes in the sporting, education and political field will be launched at the Korsten Library. There will be high school debates at the New Brighton Library for the whole week, with the winners being announced on the Friday.
The detailed programme will be available on the NMBM website, as well as in the libraries.
