Gqeberha — The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Libhongolethu Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) has achieved significant strides in improving transportation services for residents. Following safety concerns that led to the decommissioning of 25 buses, recent efforts have resulted in the repair and return of eight buses to the road.
Key Highlights Of The Revitalised Libhongolethu IPTS:
- Enhanced Schedule: During peak hours (06:30–08:30 in the morning and 14:10 to 18:10 in the afternoon), buses now operate on a 15-minute schedule, ensuring timely service. Off-peak hours maintain a 30-minute schedule.
- Passenger Impact: Approximately 2000 passengers benefit daily from the current fleet. The municipality aims to reach 10,000 passengers daily once all 25 buses are operational.
- Safety Commitment: Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, Cllr Murray, emphasised the importance of safe, reliable, and affordable transport. The ongoing repair work on other buses reflects this commitment.
- Future Expansion: Negotiations with the taxi industry are underway for Phase 1b, which aims to extend coverage to Kariega and parts of the Northeastern side of the Metro.
Commuters can purchase Libhongolethu IPTS tickets at the Metro Customer Care Centre and Cleary Park Mall offices. Let’s continue supporting sustainable urban mobility in Nelson Mandela Bay!
