2 April 2022 By Alan Straton

The 9th edition of the FIH Junior World Cup is being presented in Potchefstroom, South Africa between 15 nations from across the world and begins today, 1 April 2022.

South African U21 Hockey Coach, Lenise Marais and her team will be looking to emulate or better the 6th place finish the team achieved in 2001 in Argentina.

Lenise Marais (born 29 April 1985) represented South Africa in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. This is he second year as coach of the South African under-21 national team after coaching the team at the 2021 Junior World Cup.

South Africa are in Pool B with just two other nations following the late withdrawal from the tournament of Ukraine. This leaves the South Africans with just two pool games starting firstly with their match up against England opening the tournament on Friday (1 April) before taking on Ireland on Monday (4 April).

The opening game of the tournament between England and South Africa started at 11:00 am today.

Still to be played today are:

  • Netherlands v United Staes – 1:00 pm
  • Canada v Zimbabwe – 3:00 pm
  • Korea v Uruguay – 5:00 pm
  • Argentina v Austria – 7:00 pm

Set up in 1924, the FIH is recognised by the International Olympic Committee, as well as by the FIH’s Members and the Continental Federations, as the sole ultimate governing body for the sport of Hockey throughout the world.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
