Transnet National Ports Authority Nelson Mandela Bay Ports commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day by donating seedlings, JoJo Tanks, and gardening utensils to Buyelembo in KwaDwesi.
NMB Ports partnered with Buyelembo, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), to promote a school gardening project that will benefit the community by supplying soup kitchens with fresh produce. In line with this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day, “The legacy lives on through You: Climate, Food, and Solidarity”, the contribution will assist in dismantling poverty by promoting sustainable food systems through gardening.
Buyelembo has an agreement with Khanyisa School for the Blind to utilize their garden for seedling and crop production. Buyelembo then shares the produce with Khanyisa School for the Blind, indigent residents, and soup kitchens in and around KwaDwesi.
Thabiso Sankolobe, Director for Buyelembo said” We welcome TNPA’s intervention, it will make a significant impact towards promoting food security for our community. We work closely with schools to promote food gardening. We also share our produce/ harvest with soup kitchens to reduce hunger and malnutrition.”
“This year’s programme is crucial as food insecurity is severe and affects numerous households, exacerbated by the effects of high unemployment and post-pandemic effects on society. As NMB Ports we chose to improve livelihoods by addressing the community’s nutritional needs through a sustainable project” said Pamela Yoyo: Port Manager: NMB Ports
