According to the EFF the Hawks raided the Mfanasekhaya Gqobose and Munelek Buildings to gather evidence for an investigation relating to an alleged collusion activity, dating back to 2006, between officials and service providers in the Municipality. Apparently a service provider was contracted by an Engineering conpany which had been awarded the Coega tender. When the service provider failed to deliver one the contracted services questions were raised around to the explosion of the Coega substation.
This explosion in turn caused a general electricity blackout in Motherwell also disrupting the power supply in Coega Special Economic Zone 15. The damages are estimated to have cost the city around R40 Million.
The EFF also said that the Nelson Mandlea Bay Metropolitan Municipality is classed as dysfunctional, characterised by the lack of financial controls leading to irregular expenditure, supply chain corruption and failure to adhere to the Municipal Finance Management Act.
City Manager, Noxolo Nqwazi, also came under fire for her pending fraud and corruption charges relating to the alleged irregular awarding of a R24.6 Million toliet tender meant for 2000 poor households during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The EFF called for the immediate resignation of Nqwazi forgetting that Nqwazi can only be fired if found guilty by a duly-authorised tribunal such as a disciplinary board or is convicted by a court of law.
The EFF should rather be pushing for her suspension until such time that the court pronounces on her corruption charges.
