Integrated Public Transport System to be tabled at Council this week

10 October 2011 By NMB Communications

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s efforts to bring a safe, reliable and cost-effective integrated public transport system will receive a huge boost when Council decides on the proposed plan to fast-track the process this week.

In terms of the Executive Mayor’s report to council, the plan to turn-around the implementation of the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) entails the formation of a high-level committee to drive and oversee the process going forward.

The Portfolio Chairperson for Infrastructure, Engineering and Electricity, Cllr Andile Mfunda will serve as the political champion of the committee on behalf of the Executive Mayor, Cllr. Zanoxolo Wayile to whom the committee will report regularly going forward, bolstering the implementation process with strong political support.

The Executive Director, Walter Shaidi will give technical support and a suitably experienced negotiator will be appointed to engage with the taxi industry cooperatives and the bus company in order to reach an agreement on the terms and conditions of a contract for the provision of public transport services for the next 12 years.

The Executive Mayor’s report also proposes that Council approves an interim organisational structure so that dedicated personnel to implement the project may be obtained.

The principles of the Expanded Public Works Programme are to be adopted in the implementation process to maximize job creation as per government priorities in the medium term expenditure framework.

“We are very optimistic that the proposed changes in the implementation of the IPTS will give the necessary boost in the process and see us deliver superior transport services working with the local industry stakeholders and other social partners.

However, the proposed structural changes can never succeed in themselves; we are going to need strong commitment from all stakeholders to take the process forward. Time has come for Nelson Mandela Bay residents and visitors to get world class transportation services in the city,” said Mayor Wayile.

The Executive Mayor’s report containing the IPTS proposals will be tabled at the council meeting on Thursday 13 October 2011.
