I am Guilty of Recalling Finch and Henson

3 March 2011 By Alan Straton

At Toni's 4 March

In the good old bad old days of the late Seventies Lillies bar was one of the places to visit to have a pint and listen to one of the many bands that provided music and entertainment. Brian Finch and Ken Henson were but just one of the loud bands we used to drink to.

Ja Mom I know that you have now done the Math and worked out that I wasn’t really sleeping over at a friends house but rather haunting dens of iniquity as an underage school going hooligan. Thanks for cleaning my rooms carpet on more than one occasion and Yes, it was because I had had a drink and not something I ate.

Now that we have that off of our chests and that Lillies is no more we have to spend time at other establishments to get our old time rock fix, places like Toni’s in Newton Park for instance.

One half of the Fench and Henson duo, Brian Finch, will grace Toni’s with his presence this Friday evening 4 March.

The entrance fee is considerably more than the one or two bucks we sometimes had to pay in the Seventies, but, at R60.00 could well be worth it to relive old memories and maybe roll in the car park with someone you take a liking or disliking to. Listen up Dagless – no homo erotic stuff from you, though.

At various times Finch and/or Henson released these albums:

  • Bringing Back The Good Times – Brian Finch (1974) featuring Kenny on guitar
  • Let Us Become Men – Ken E Henson (1977)
  • Playgrounds In Paradise (1977)
  • High Octane (1978)
  • Giving A Little Away – Ken E Henson’s Harambee (1978)
  • Recycled (1979
  • At Home In The Dark (1980) half-live
  • Free And Easy – The Very Best Of Finch And Henson (1993)
  • Hero of Heroes – Brian Finch (January 2002)
  • Another Time, Another Place – Ken E Henson (October 2002)
  • Never Look Back – Brian Finch featuring Ken E Henson (April 2003)
  • Bringing Back The Good Times (re-issue) – Brian Finch (April 2003)

Contact Toni to book a table or for more info.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
