Hundreds of unemployed residents enrolled in NMBM Learnership Programme since August 2016

12 March 2017 By NMB Communications

Over the last 6 months, 447 unemployed residents have been given an opportunity to learn a trade or skill through the Municipality ‘s Unemployed Learner Programmes.

Funding secured from the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) allowed our Administration to secure spaces at various colleges across the Metro.

250 of these learners are already 6 months into an Adult Education and Training Literacy Course, which has seen some promising results and progress.

Another 35 learners will this year begin a 3-year apprenticeship in either bricklaying, carpentry, fitting & turning, electrical or boilermaking.

All other learners will be taking courses in road marking, municipal finance and microsoft certified solutions.

Our Corporate Services Directorate, headed up by Cllr Dean Biddulph, has embraced its responsibility to develop skills and empower unemployed citizens with expertise necessary to find work.

With a strong focus on job creation through economic growth and skills development, this new DA-led coalition has seen unemployment drop to below 30%.

On 09 March 2017 the Mayoral Committee approved a bold plan to see the municipality partnering with Harambee, an NGO that focuses on youth employment, to create over 20 000 job opportunities over 3 years for the youth in the Metro. This will go to council for final approval at the end of the month.

Through partnerships with organisations like Harambee and ongoing municipal learnership programmes, we can turn the tide on unemployment in the Metro.

We remain committed to our promise of delivery so that Nelson Mandela Bay becomes a rising city of opportunity.

We are moving forward again.
