The Humewood Golf Club will again throw its weight behind a worthy cause when it stages its annual Charity Pro-Am tournament in Port Elizabeth on September 18 and 19.
With continued support from law firm Greyvensteins Inc, the club will host PGA club professionals from as far afield as Cape Town, who will be relishing the prospect of testing themselves on the only true links course in Africa.
The eighth edition of the event is back on the calendar with Covid finally behind us and it is set to become an annual offering once again.
The format for the team event is an alliance, with two scores to count, while the PGA professionals will play for a separate individual prize.
Humewood club manager Brendon Timm, himself a PGA pro, said they were looking forward to holding the event, which has been aimed at supporting charities in Nelson Mandela Bay. This year’s beneficiary is Zanethemba Charity Foundation
Zanethemba Charity Foundation was established in 2008 as a place of safety to meet the rising needs of orphans and vulnerable children in Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas.
“We are a non-profit organisation, registered with the department of social welfare, and currently provide refuge, care and support for 12 abused, abandoned and orphaned children at a time,” director Catherine van Rensburg said.
“We are situated at 21 Albert Road, Walmer, and have assisted 187 children since the haven was founded.
“In addition, resources permitting, we offer support to other destitute and vulnerable individuals and families, referred to us by social workers.
“The haven is overseen by a qualified social worker, as well as six care-givers trained in basic childcare, first aid, developmental stimulation, nutrition and basic education.
“The children are removed from their families by an external social worker and placed in our care with a court order.
“While in Zanethemba’s care, the children’s medical, nutritional, educational, reunification and therapeutic needs are seen to. Our goal is to show the children that they are safe, loved and wanted.
“Once the social worker has investigated the children’s circumstances, the children will either return to their parents, be placed in foster care, be adopted or be placed in a children’s home.
Timm acknowledged the role played by Zanethemba in its contribution to society, as well as the support the Charity Pro-Am had received.
“Without the backing of our sponsors, these sorts of charities would not be able to operate and ensure children are kept safe and find suitable homes,” he said.
Greyvenstein Inc managing director Liesel Greyvenstein said they were proud to contribute to society through this sporting occasion.
“This weekend more than 100 golfers, including 20 pros, will meet on the fairways of the Humewood golf course to compete in this Pro-Am, proudly sponsored by Greyvensteins Attorneys,” she said.
“This event gives our local golfers the opportunity to rub shoulders with the pros and to collaborate in something for the greater good.
“In keeping with one of our four core values of assisting our community, we are honoured to partner with Brendon Timm and the Humewood Golf Club to support such a deserving charity. “Zanethemba means ‘we give hope’ and we are grateful to have been approached by the Humewood Golf Club to be its main sponsors.
“We want to say thank you to the club for organising this event and for giving us the opportunity to join forces with them.”
