Help Bretten-Anne and Louwrens Fill in the Blanks

15 October 2011 By Alan Straton

One of the MBDA’s iconic series of installations, Route 67, will get a great boost with the launch of a publication chronicling the journeys of two cartoon characters along Route 67.

The two, still to be named and characterised characters, will have their journey chronicled with the help of budding cartoonists who are being invited to an open call at the newly revamped Athenaeum building on Saturday 22 October.

Well know artists, Bretten-Anne Moolman and Louwrens Westraadt will be heading up the project and are the points of contact for budding artists and cartoonists wishing to contribute to the ‘fleshing out’ of these characters.

Initially 20 candidates will be selected and this number will be whittled down to between 3 and 5. The final selected artists will then visit each site on Route 67 and be invited to depict each character’s journey along these art installations finally landing up at the flagpole on the Donkin.

The finished product will also form part of a planned exhibition over the period of the National Arts Festival in June and July 2012.

    The
ArtComix project is funded by the National Lotteries Distribution
Trust Fund (NLDTF) and is implemented by the Mandela Bay Development
Agency, working on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

    The comic will be
directed at ages 12 years and up and involves creating two main
cartoon characters, a brother [15] and sister [12] who live in New
Brighton. Within the context of photo-realistic backgrounds and
environments they engage with MBDA’s Route 67 as well as related
    institutes.

    Any
artist who wishes to be considered for involvement in the ArtComix
project needs to bring along some of their drawings or a CD-R disc of
images and arrive at the Athenaeum, corner of Belmont Terrace and
Military road at 10H00 Saturday the 22nd
of October 2011 to be part of a whole day workshop and selection
    process.
