The Donkin Reserve: This is a portion of land given in perpetuity to the residents of city for their use by Sir Rufane Donkin, who was the acting governor of the Cape. He supervised the landing of the British settlers when they arrived in 1820. He also named the city Port Elizabeth after his beloved wife, Elizabeth, who had died in 1818 at Meerut in India.
