The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) buses are back on the road from 5am tomorrow (Wednesday, 16 May) following the end of the national bus strike.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Cllr Marlon Daniels, said he is happy that all the parties could reach an agreement in the matter.
“I understand the plight of the workers who participated in the strike action. They had legitimate reasons to do so.
“They deserve praise and appreciation for not resorting to violence or damaging property during the strike enabling all of us to restart without major devastation.
“I would like to invite the residents to buy tickets at the municipality’s customer care centres at Cleary Park and Mfanasekhaya Gqoboshe to make use of our safe and reliable transport system.
“However, I would like to emphasize that people get their tickets at these centres as no one will be allowed on a bus without a ticket.
“Pensioners, scholars and university students with proof of their status are welcome to use of the 20% discount for them while officials from the Metro Police, South African Police Services and security services travel for free.
“In addition to this we have two security officers on every bus to ensure the safety of passengers. We are making these concessions to ensure that those who cannot afford it, travel cheaper and those in the armed forces can provide additional security on the buses.
“I also want to warn motorists not to park in the IPTS bus lanes as their vehicles will be towed away without exception,” MMC Daniels said.
The routes that will be in operation from tomorrow is the Cleary Park to the Central Business District, a feeder route operating from Cleary Park to William Slammert and a shuttle service from Lillian Diedericks to Norwich.
Two additional feeder routes will be operational later this month with Cleary Park to Baatjies Street (Bloemendal) being phased in from 21 May and the Cleary Park to Kleinskool feeder route from 28 May.
