A delegation of 12 people will be arriving in Port Elizabeth from our Twin City in Sweden, Gothenburg, tomorrow, Tuesday 30 October 2018.
Delegates will be inspect the closed Red Location Museum on 1 November where they will be addressed by Councillor Captain.
The Red Location Museum was part funded by Sweden’s Museum of World Culture which is based in Gothenburg.
The Red Location Museum opened its doors to the public on 10 November 2006.
Built as a tribute to the liberation struggle against apartheid, the museum incorporates the corrugated iron theme of informal settlement living. It consists of galleries housing a variety of exhibitions and arrangements of montages, timelines and modules, detailing the history of the township, its people and their place in the bid for liberty.
The Red Location Museum has been closed since 18 October 2013 due to community protests around RDP housing issues.
The delegation will split into three teams to work on different aspects of the project, i.e. the Access Team, the Youth Team and the Partnership Management Committee.
Two youth from Helenvale have been selected to be part of the youth team and will therefore form part of the deliberations and work.
The delegation will be led by Ms Mariya Voyvodova, Deputy Mayor of the City of Gothenburg and the NMBM Deputy Executive Mayor Thsonono Buyeye as Chairperson of the NMBM section of the Management Committee will be hosting them along with Councillor Captain and Councillor Senekal. They will later be joined by Ms Cecelia Julin who is the Swedish Ambassador on Friday, 2 November 2018.
On Friday, 08:30 at the Council Chambers, City Hall, the Partnership Management Committee (PMC) – made up of politicians (Deputy Mayors, both NMBM and City of Gothenburg) and the Access and Youth Teams will present on the work that they have done throughout the week. The Swedish Ambassador has been invited to participate in this session.
One wonders if the question of hosting the Volvo Ocean Race Southern African stopover will come up. The City has been asked on three occasions to bid to host this international event and one wonders if maybe our friends at Volvo Car’s Head Office are beginning to doubt our capability to host in light of our failure to open the Red Location Museum these past five years.
