Generous Donation to Zwide Library Book Collection

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Zwide Library received a welcoming boost thanks to a generous donation of books from ABSA on Friday, 10 June.

The donation from ABSA came as a result of an article published in a local newspaper about the shortage of books at the Zwide Library, and the call for people to donate books.

The staff at ABSA decided to put in a collective effort to collect books and donate them to the Zwide Library.

The donated books cover a mix of various topics, such as novels, life skills, motivational and children’s books.

Corporate Social Investment representative for ABSA, Andy de le Mare, said they were proud to assist the Zwide Library.

“This is one of many initiatives that the ABSA group is involved in. When we heard about the plight of the Zwide Library we decided to come to the rescue. Our staff was so enthusiastic and even asked for books from friends from as far away as the United States of America and the United Kingdom,” said de le Mare.

“It is very important for the community to read so that they can be empowered with knowledge. The society prospers when it is empowered with knowledge and encouraging children to read and acquire knowledge makes perfect sense to us,” said de le Mare.

Portfolio Chairperson for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe, said the Municipality was grateful to ABSA for their donation and their quick response to the call for assistance from the library.

“We need more of this support from the business sector, if not more. This donation will go a long way in empowering the children of Zwide and the surrounding areas,” said Cllr Lobishe.

She said the initiative by ABSA shows the difference that can be made when government works closely with the business sector to bring a better life for the people.
