Free Port Elizabeth Public Art Tours

12 April 2011 By NMB Communications

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is offering free public tours of Mandela Bay’s public art, monuments, memorials and heritage sites. Two tours will take place on Saturday 30 April and Saturday 14 May 2011.

The tours will be accompanied by highly respected historians, academics and senior citizens who know the city and its public art well including Margaret Harradine, Dorelle Sapere, Mr Amrit Daya, David Jones, Mary Duker, Nonceba Shoba, Lulama Mngazi, Chris du Preez, Emma Taggart and Jenny Fabbri. The tour guides will encourage conversation at each site with the intention of bringing together, acknowledging and enjoying the memories, histories and heritage of all communities in the Bay.

The first tour, Sharing histories: Monuments, memorials and heritage sites, will take place on 30 April 2011 from 09h30 to 17h00. Everyone will meet at the Art Museum at 09h15, proceed to South End and take a view of Fort Frederick then move on to the Donkin Reserve, St George’s Park, New Brighton, Bethelsdorp and Uitenhage (via Despatch to view the chimney).

The second tour Public art: A journey from the colonial past into the present will take place on 14 May 2011 from 10h00 to 16h30. Leaving from the Art Museum, the tour will start at the Campanile and follow Route 67, a public art initiative run by the Mandela Bay Development Agency which includes Vuyisile Mini Square and the Donkin Reserve. Discussion will take place around new, proposed and existing art pieces and buildings on route with reference to other areas of the city such as South End, Walmer and the beach front. The tour will then move to New Brighton and North End before returning to the Art Museum.

A tour bus will be provided to ferry each tour group from site to site. Those joining the tour will be required to dress for comfort and protection from the weather and bring sustenance for the day’s outing (water, fruit juice, snacks and a packed lunch).

Booking is essential and can be done by telephoning the Art Museum on 041 5062000. Please note that places on the tour bus are limited and will be reserved on a first come first served basis.
