First phase of Njoli Square Re-development well under way

The first phase of the much anticipated R286 million Njoli Square Re-development is well under way and heralds in a major boost for the rejuvenation of Kwazakhele and surrounds.

The first phase of this flagship Vision 2020 project, which started in June, entails the construction of a tarmac area, provision of shelter for commuters, the construction of toilets as well as temporary administrative facilities.

When completed:

  • Community facilities and municipal functions will be accessible in the heart of the township. One of the key components of the development is a state of the art library and research centre. It will be available for use by students and scholars.
  • It creates a major Integrated Public Transport System (one of the key systems in Nelson Mandela Bay) within a mixed-used development corridor and supports the long-term public transport strategy of the city.
  • It will contribute towards the creation of a dignified space within a previously marginalised community.
  • During construction of the public facilities it is estimated that approximately 2 000 jobs will be created;
  • After construction of the public facilities, approximately 200 permanent jobs will be created.  In addition to this, the new facility will house approximately 200 informal traders, as well as the entire public transport fraternity operating to and from Njoli Square; and,
  • The proposed development will also act as an SMME development hub – therefore, through training and mentoring, many jobs will be created outside of this development.

A report tabled at the Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy meeting this week states that only three owners out the of the 75 affected, are still not on board with the process of getting this major project off the ground.

Deputy Executive Mayor Thando Ngcolomba and Portfolio Chairperson for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy Andile Mfunda will meet with the owners to reach an agreement as soon as possible to ensure that the rest of the project becomes a reality.

This project will not only rejuvenate the township area, it also has the potential to be a major catalyst for further developments.
