Newly elected Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Executive Mayor, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe, engaged with the community of Kariega during a meeting at Babs Madlakane Hall on Thursday, 6 November 2024. The engagement session was aimed at updating residents on current service delivery improvement plans and providing a comprehensive post-disaster update, following the recent triple floods that affected the area.
The meeting was attended by representatives from various directorates, including Infrastructure & Engineering, Human Settlements, Electricity & Energy, and Sports, Recreation, Arts & Culture. Discussions highlighted critical infrastructure projects, such as the repair of the Cuyler Bridge and Matanzima Road Bridge, as well as the restoration of recreational spaces to benefit the youth of Kariega.
In her address, Executive Mayor Lobishe underscored the commitment of the NMBM to fast-track repairs of critical infrastructure and stabilise service delivery. “We are here to re-ignite an improved service delivery approach and chapter for the NMBM, a chapter where we commit to work hard, and walk this path with the people of Kariega.
We are accountable to you and are dedicated to improving and providing effective service delivery, promoting community development, ensuring a safe and healthy environment, and supporting financial stability for our community,” she affirmed.
The Executive Mayor reiterated the Municipality’s renewed mandate to promote a democratic and accountable government that ensures the equitable provision of basic services whilst encouraging active community involvement in local governance.
These principles form the foundation of the administration’s efforts to build trust, deliver services and strengthen ties with the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay. She also mentioned the idea of building a new Council Chamber to serve as a central point from which the residents of Gqeberha and Kariega will be served.
The community was also encouraged to share their service delivery challenges and offer proposals on how the Municipality can work with the community to build a resilient, well-serviced community.
In a notable announcement, Executive Mayor Lobishe shared the exciting news that two new factories are set to open in Nelson Mandela Bay. This development is poised to boost the local economy and provide significant job opportunities for residents.
The meeting marked a pivotal step in building trust, fostering transparent two-way communication, and reinforcing the Municipality’s commitment to serve the Kariega community.
