Ensuring Spaza Shop Regulatory Compliance

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is continuing its Spaza Shop food safety communication and awareness campaign across the metro, focusing on improving compliance to health and safety standards for the benefit of residents. This follows the President’s call for all Spaza shops to be legally registered and compliant to the country’s health, and safety standards and other regulatory frameworks.

Today, NMBM Environmental Health teams conducted inspections in Kariega, checking for compliance with food handling regulations, business documentation, and the structural integrity of facilities. This weekly initiative aims to ensure that businesses meet health and safety standards, equally protecting the interests of both shop owners and customers.

The frequent operations involve a collaborative effort from various stakeholders, including NMBM Metro Police, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Immigration Services, the South African Revenue Service (SARS), NMBM Waste Management, and the NMBM Budget and Treasury department. Together, they we collaboratively to enforce regulations and promote lawful business operations.

The spaza shop owners must visit Environmental Health offices at 13 & 14th Floor Lillian Diedericks Building in Gqeberha or 3rd Floor Uitenhage Town Hall in Kariega to apply for a Certificate of Acceptability. Section 3 (1) of R638 of 2018 states that, “a person may not handle or permit food to be handled on food premises in respect of which a valid certificate of acceptability has not been issued.”

They are also advised to use pest control services to maintain health, hygiene and ensure customer safety. This initiative is part of the broader Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality efforts to promote public health and business compliance in the township economy and community.
