Nelson Mandela Bay will host the 2013 Institute of Municipal Engineers of Southern Africa (Imesa) conference. The conference was launched at the Boardwalk Hotel on Tuesday, 8 October and will be held from 23 to 25 October at the Boardwalk Convention Centre.
“Municipal engineers are behind almost every structure you see every day, the building we are sitting in right now, water from a tap, the road you drive on to work; it is all service delivery done by municipal engineers,” said Mr Barry Martin, Chairman of the local Imesa branch.
Without the technical services departments from which our country’s municipal engineers work, we would not have infrastructure and therefore would not survive. Nelson Mandela Bay will host about 800 delegates, consisting of municipal engineers and some political leaders, in two weeks time, bringing in an estimated R5 million in tourism revenue.
Imesa promotes the interest of municipal engineers and their profession and creates a platform for the exchange of ideas and viewpoints on all aspects of municipal engineering with the aim of increasing knowledge and highlighting best practices in Local Government.
“It’s very demanding serving our communities; therefore our theme is very vital,” said Imesa President Frank Stevens.
“I’m sure that we will have a successful conference.”
The conference runs over a period of 2 and a half days and includes a technical tour in Nelson Mandela Bay. The tour will include visiting Van Stadens Windfarm, Coega Habour, Volkswagen Factory, Coca-Cola Factory, SA Breweries and Crossways Farm Village.
The conference is aimed at reviewing delivery of municipal engineers. “Municipal engineers will be learning from each other and networking will take place. This is vital as interaction with each other is very important to encourage a culture of learning.”
An exciting addition to the IMESA conference is an educational afternoon for scholars. One hundred of the top Grade 11 mathematics and science students from different schools in Nelson Mandela Bay have been invited to attend an informative afternoon discovering the diverse field of engineering.
Editors Notes: The figure of R5 million is based on a daily estimated local spend of R2 500.00 per visitor – the current accepted tourism industry estimate.
