Electricity MMC meets with disgruntled residents

Following a site visit to assess the damage caused by an explosion at the Motherwell substation that plunged the area into darkness on Monday night, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Electricity and Energy Mayoral Committee Member, Cllr Ziyanda Mnqokoyi said affected residents can expect power to be fully restored by Tuesday, 12 November 2024, evening following a swift response by electricity teams. However due to our team’s diligent work, power has already been restored in all affected areas.

The newly appointed MMC earlier met with disgruntled residents in Motherwell on Tuesday morning to assure them that the matter was receiving attention. Preliminary investigations showed that a possible moisture interfered with busbars and caused the explosion which then affected the breaker. By Tuesday, 15:45pm, power had already been restored in some areas.

“At about 08:45pm last night my office was alerted of an electricity outage in Motherwell which was caused by flashover(explosion) on the 22KV bus section breaker which interconnects two busbars in the Motherwell main substation. My office working together with that of the Executive Director immediately responded by coordinating officials and contractors to be on site.”

“This morning at around 9am we went to the substation to assess progress made on the repairs and to get reports from officials as to when power will be restored. Upon our interactions and the team’s agile response, we can now safely confirm that electricity has been fully restored in all affected areas.

We’d like to apologise to all the affected residents for this inconvenience and thank them for their patience whilst our teams worked tirelessly to restore power in all affected areas,” the MMC added.
