Drink on the Beach at Your Peril

8 November 2017 By NMB Communications

Safety during the festive season is paramount as law enforcement will be out in full force to deal with indiscriminate drinking by motorists and beachgoers alike which means that sober habits while enjoying Nelson Mandela Bay is critical.

This stern warning was issued by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Cllr John Best at the media launch of the summer season branded SPAR Delight in Summer last night.

“We are NOT going to allow any alcohol on our beaches. The South African Police Services, Metro Police, and other Safety and Security apparatus have been informed and will take the necessary action.

“The only area where people will be allowed to consume alcohol is at the picnic site but please be aware our new Traffic Chief, Warren Prins, has been instructed to look out for those drivers that will attempt to drink and drive on our roads.

“Last year we confiscated thousands of litres of alcohol and we will continue to do so. Before intoxicated people present a problem for lifeguards on the beaches, they will be taken away so that others can enjoy their experience.

“I have been assured that the beachfront cameras will be fully operational from the beginning of December. This will enhance our monitoring capabilities and response to transgressions as well as improving water safety.

“I can assure you there is a safety plan in place and we are working towards delivering a safe festive season in the same vein as last year,” MMC Best said.

The SPAR Delight in Summer kicks off with the traditional Opening of the Season at Hobie Beach on 16 December followed with a packed and improved entertainment line-up.

The Nelson Mandela Bay supplemented its safety equipment with three new Yamaha jet skis, three rescue sleighs, three rubber ducks and three quad bikes to ensure greater efficiency by lifeguards.
