This year’s Motherwell Freedom Run will not just replace the SA half marathon that used to take place in this suburb; it will also provide the unique opportunity of getting our rainbow nation to run down the streets of Motherwell, said Michael Mbambani, event organizer.
Mbambani described last year’s event as a successful incident free race that gave the sponsors the confidence to support the event again.
Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile said the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as a developmental local government institution appreciates this event as it is held at a time when the country celebrates Freedom Month.
“A special thank you should go to the athletes as they performed extremely well last year by dishing up a showpiece that made the first edition of this race worthwhile. They also showed that Nelson Mandela Bay is indeed the home of champions.
“Thank you to Mr Price, Maqadi Ayanda Plant Hire and all the other sponsors for their foresight to support the Motherwell Freedom Run. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality felt compelled to support this event as well and it must definitely be considered when the institution goes through its budgeting processes. It is important that we do so as we cannot betray our children as they are our future,” he added.
Last year’s winners George Ntshiliza (30 minutes and 12 seconds) and Ntombesintu Mfunzi (35 minutes and 46 seconds) will try to defend their titles against stiff competition.
This year Maqadi Ayanda Plant Hire, Mr Price Sport, loveLife, Madiba Bay Athletics Club, Mr Price EP Athletics Club, Bukani Print, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism as well as the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality support the race.
Mbambani said the second edition of the 10km race that starts at 7am on Saturday, 21 April and the 5km race starts 15 minutes later.
