Discover the art of beading at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum

22 February 2012 By NMB Communications

Well-known beadwork collector and dealer, Stephen Long will share his extensive knowledge and appreciation of traditional African beadwork during a public talk at the Art Museum on Wednesday 29 February 2012.  His talk on traditional beadwork of the Eastern Cape Province starts at 17:30 for 18:00 and will be of particular interest to both novice and advanced beaders, jewellery and fashion designers and crafters.

Although based in Cape Town, Stephen has travelled extensively throughout the Eastern Cape, studying and collecting beadwork.  His interest was sparked at the age of five by glass beads used in the making of traditional artifacts.

Traditional folk costumes from around the world, especially those worn by nomadic pastoral cultures such as the Masai in Kenya, the Xhosa and groups outside of Africa such as the Native American and people from Mongolia, have fueled his interest.  Over the years, Stephen has helped the Art Museum to build an extensive collection of antique craftwork which includes unique beadwork, textile, ceramic and leather artifacts.

There is no charge to attend the talk and all members of the public are invited to attend.

For more information, please telephone the Art Museum on 041 506 2000.
