The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature will be hosting Taking Legislature to the People programme from the 22nd -25th October in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality under the theme “Accelerating service delivery through accountability”. The venue for the programme is the Ernest Swanepoel Hall in Despatch. Taking Legislature to the people programme is an oversight and public participation programme that is hosted by the Legislature on an annual basis. Paramount to exercising our Constitutional obligation, the aim is to ensure that members of the public have an opportunity to interact with their elected public representatives and address service delivery matters affecting them directly.
Prior to the visit of each area within the identified Municipality, service delivery matters and/or projects were identified to ensure effective oversight and resolution of community challenges on the spot by committees during the pre-visits to the Taking Legislature to the People Programme
In terms of the programme . reports emanating from Portfolio Committees’ pre-visits will be taken each day, after the report has been presented members of the community will be given an opportunity to interact with the report after-which MECs will provide a responses. This will be followed by a formal plenary in the afternoon whereby reports will be debated.
On the last day, MPL will embark on the Letsema Legacy Programme with at least one project identified in each of the six clusters of the host Metropolitan Municipality.
Members of the public from the other Clusters of NMB will then be transported on a daily basis to the central venue.
