The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Speaker of Council Eugene Johnson has called on residents and stakeholders to attend and participate in the Ward Delimitation Public Meetings hosted by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) from 4-6 September 2024.
The purpose of the public meetings is to create awareness and empower residents about the reasons, process and benefits of ward delimitation.
Delimitation is a process of fixing of boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country, in this case in municipalities.
After consulting with the Independent Electoral Commission, the MDB is mandated to delimit all metropolitan and local municipalities into wards as per Schedule 1(2) of Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998.
The Wards are delimited every five years preceding the Local Government Elections. This process will determine how Wards are structured, the number of voting districts and the number of councillors in that particular municipality.
The number of registered voters is critical to this process as it is one of the considerations that determine how this process is implemented.
The public meetings will start from Wednesday, 4 September 2024 to 6 September 2024. These meetings have been structured in a cluster approach starting from, Govan Mbeki, Alex Matikinca, Zola Nqini and Champion Galela clusters.
