Dear Athol, Stanford and Buyelekhaya

18 July 2013 By Alan Straton

I find myself curiously disturbed at your latest actions, Athol.

The chattering classes remain strangely silent on two of your recent ‘triumphs’:

  1. The suspension of Stanford Slabbert as a result of his forwarding of a supposedly ‘racist e-mail’ and
  2. Your triumphant welcoming to the DA of a convicted criminal, AbaThembu king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo *, who faces the prospect of 15 years in jail.

How is it that a man NOT CONVICTED of any crime can be suspended and then a man CONVICTED of a crime be welcomed to the DA.

Are we trying to make sure that a party known for strict moral and ethical codes now seriously becomes known as the ‘Desperate Alternative’?

Sorry for you Athol, but you and your cronies are seriously looking like some other party and NOT a party of choice. Maybe a vote for the DA will be a vote for ‘business as usual’?

* Dalindyebo – our self confessed dagga smoking king (who says he will give up as soon as Zuma stops being corrupt) is appealing a 15-year sentence after the Eastern Cape High Court in Mthatha convicted him of 10 crimes, including arson, culpable homicide, the kidnapping of a woman and her six children, defeating the course of justice and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.

Take a look at this interview, might resolve some questions http://www.enca.com/south-africa/da-defends-dalindyebo-decision

Nope – doesn’t resolve the questions for me at all:

Athol says; “With regard to his charges… it’s important to know the king went to court to answer the charges against him. He was sentenced. He’s now utilising his judicial and constitutional right to challenge the sentence in the court of appeal. Unlike the President of the country (Zuma), who has 600 charges against him [and] who says he wants his day in court but spent tens of millions of rand in taxpayers’ money to stay out of court and even manipulated the National Prosecuting Authority.”

Surely now Stanford can now say; “With regard to the charges… it’s important to know that I have NOT been convicted in a court of law as being racist, but only by the hearsay of my peers and opposition in politics. No criminal action has been brought against me. Learned people agree that the e-mail was NOT racist. Unlike the abaThembu king, who has 15 charges against him and who admits to breaking the law of the land saying he will only stop smoking dagga when Zuma stops being corrupt”

Methinks that the fact that the king MAY bring thousands of votes is the carrot here which is being desperately spun using the same words that ‘business as usual’ use.

No good will come of this.

An emailed comment: I am happy to support a dagga smoking party – was also going to vote for that other dagga smoking party – so now am confused about who I should vote for.
